An inmate in the Israel Prison Service is using a cellphone to communicate from behind bars.

The Hebrew language prison service posted video of the inmate using the phone to call his mother from inside a small cell.

It is not known how many prisoners use the service.

A Tel Aviv resident who uses the service told the Hebrew language service that the cell is shared with another inmate, who has a cell phone that is connected to the cell phone network and has access to the Internet.

The Israeli Prison Service said in a statement that it was taking the issue seriously and would take action to ensure that the inmate did not violate his prison rules.

The statement did not mention any specific cases.

The service has been a source of criticism from the Israeli government and some members of the Jewish community.
